The cookies and similar technologies our website uses, and how to control them.

This policy explains how Megabus Software Pty Ltd (ABN 18 605 992 096) ("Megabus", "we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies on our website, www.megabus.com.au, including our help centre. Please read it with our privacy policy.
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Websites can also store information in your browser in other ways, such as local storage (kept until you clear it) and session storage (cleared when you close the tab). In this policy, "cookies" means all of these unless we say otherwise.
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept cookies that are not strictly necessary. Accept and Decline are equally prominent.
Changing your mind. Select Cookie settings at the bottom of any page. If you withdraw consent, we stop the tools from loading, delete the Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity cookies stored under our website's address, and remove the campaign and browser identifiers described below. We cannot delete cookies that Google or Microsoft store under their own addresses, but you can remove those in your browser settings.
Other controls. Most browsers let you see, block and delete cookies. Google offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on every website: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. You can manage Google's advertising settings at myadcenter.google.com.
These are needed for our website to work or to remember a choice you made. They do not need your consent and are never used for analytics or advertising.
Staff only. Megabus staff who sign in to edit our website also get payload-token (keeps them signed in, 2 hours), mb_preview (marks a preview of unpublished pages and keeps analytics off, 8 hours), __prerender_bypass (page previews, until the browser closes) and yt_oauth_state (protects connecting our YouTube account, 10 minutes). These are never set for visitors.
These help us understand which pages are useful, where people get stuck, and which campaigns lead to enquiries.
About Microsoft Clarity. Clarity records how people use our pages, such as clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, so we can review replays and heatmaps. We set it to hide what you type into our forms and assistants.
Our Google Analytics account is linked to our Google Ads accounts. If you accept, Google can use cookies to measure whether our ads lead to visits and enquiries. Accepting does not allow Google to use your visit to personalise the ads you see. We tell Google that personalised advertising is not permitted.
Campaign details kept in mb_attribution can include ad-click codes from Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising and Meta. They stay in your browser and are sent only to us, only with a form you submit. Our website does not send them to the advertising platforms.
Some pages, including help articles, show videos from YouTube or Vimeo. Nothing from YouTube or Vimeo loads until you press play. Until then you see a still image.
Our assistants do not use cookies beyond the session identifier above. Because the conversation is the service you asked for, your questions and the answers are kept whether or not you accept cookies, and are sent to our AI provider, Anthropic PBC, in the United States, to produce answers. Where a product walkthrough's voice is switched on and you choose to speak, your recording is sent to ElevenLabs, in the United States, to be turned into text, and we do not keep it. Our privacy policy has the details.
Google, Microsoft and Vimeo may process and store information collected through their cookies outside Australia, including in the United States. Plausible processes its data in the European Union. Our website, its database and its uploaded files are hosted in Australia.
Our own page-tracking records, visit records and assistant conversations are deleted automatically after 90 days. We never store your IP address; we keep a one-way code instead, which cannot be turned back into it. Database backups are kept for up to 35 days after that. Information you send in a form, including its campaign details, is kept with your enquiry as set out in our privacy policy. Google Analytics data is kept for 14 months, and Microsoft Clarity keeps data under its own settings.
We will update this policy when we change the cookies we use. If we add a new kind of tracking that needs your consent, we will ask you again. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
